MFL – Spanish

Intent Statement

We recognise that the development of language, both English and other languages, is fundamental to a child’s learning. Being able to communicate in an additional language supports our equality policy; making everyone feel valued and providing an opening to other cultures. Through learning another language, this enables our children to foster curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.

The 2014 National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages aims to ensure that all children:
• Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
• Are able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they are continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
• Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
• Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

At Houghton Regis Primary School we are committed to ensure that our teaching of Spanish provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language through the use of a programme called Languagenut. This resource allows our children to develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through a wide range of games and activities. Throughout Key Stage 2, Spanish is taught following a clear programme of study and is delivered weekly by the class teacher.
